We all have a weakness or two. I'm no different! I'll be the first to admit of more than my fair share of weaknesses. These weaknesses vary widely from one person to the next. For me, it is the craving for a sweet and perfectly glazed donut that seems to frequently call my name. Fortunately, cycling brings the benefit of expending a high number of calories, and it's nice to have a little reward for all your strenuous effort pedaling yourself around. So every once in a while, a tasty donut is that perfect little reward. This is, of course, in addition to the sense of accomplishment and contribution to sustaining our delicate environment by cycling instead of driving.
Enter this blog post. This is a series of blog posts and videos chronicling short bike rides to some of Los Angeles' seemingly countless donut shops! With so many donut shops in the Los Angeles area, it is no surprise it has been name the unofficial donut capital of the world. However, the special part is not solely the sheer quantity of donut shops. What is really unique is that most of these donut shops are independently or family run businesses. As if you needed another reason to set out for your next bike ride! So take a look. Then air up those tires for a ride to one of these shops or your own local favorite for a rewarding snack after all your efforts.
SK DONUTS & CROISSANT
If you’re looking for the best Cronut in town, SK Donuts & Croissant is the place to go. What is a Cronut? A Cronut is an ingenious culinary delicacy combining two of the greatest pastries known to human kind, the donut and the croissant, in one unforgettable treat for your taste-buds. SK Donuts is consistently ranked among the best donut shops in the Los Angeles area, so it was long overdue and more than worthy of a Sunday Donut Ride.
In the neighborhood of La Brea, the central location of SK Donuts couldn’t be better. It’s easy to find and stop by on your next ride. As always on a bike, you have the freedom to make your ride as leisurely or adventurous as you desire. You can see from my chosen route below, that it was anything but direct. The central location of SK Donuts allows one to make a nice loop around the city. For example, you may choose the inclusion of a climb up for a view of the city from Griffith Observatory as I did. Other fun options could lead you through Hollywood, Koreatown, or the Miracle Mile neighborhoods. Whatever you choose, the reward of stopping at this shop is fit for royalty.
If you’ve not yet experienced the delight of a Cronut, it comes with a high recommendation to do so as soon as possible. The combination of a flaky croissant crust and fried freshness of a donut is divine. In addition to being one of the best at creating this, SK’s mixes it up with options of delicious fillings like apple pie, strawberry, and peaches & cream. One bite of one of these treats and you’ll be asking for another visit soon. In addition to the specialty Cronut are the more standard options for donuts and croissants - both of which are well above standard in their taste and quality! All of this comes with friendly service and more than fair prices.
Very conveniently, there is an excellent bike shop located directly adjacent to SK’s! The fellow cycling friends at La Brea Bike Works are available for service, accessories, parts, and new bikes of all kinds. I don’t know if the selection of location was intentional for either of these wonderful establishments, but it seems they are the perfect complement!
