Culver City to Venice
There’s something surreal about rolling down Venice Boulevard with no cars in sight, just the steady rhythm of bike chains, the conversation, and the buzz of Los Angeles finally slowing down to human speed.
That’s the magic of CicLAvia, LA’s open-street event that transforms miles of roadway into car-free zones for cyclists, walkers, skaters, and families. On August 17th, the route connected Culver City to Venice, creating a rare and beautiful flow between neighborhoods that usually feel worlds apart when you’re behind a windshield.
The Ride
We started our day early near Downtown Culver City, coffee in hand (shoutout to Super Domestic Coffee for fueling the ride). The energy was contagious, kids and adults of all ages, all there with one purpose: to ride freely.
Once the streets opened, it was just that. No honking, no exhaust, just sun on our backs (and it was a hot summer day) and the sound of people actually talking to each other. Riders stopped to snap photos under palm-lined stretches, vendors handed out cold brew and snacks, and local bands set up makeshift stages on street corners.
The Highlights
Mid-City Pit Stops: Local cafes and bike shops opened their doors for riders, offering quick repairs and much-needed hydration.
Venice Energy: The route ended near the beach, where cyclists coasted into the ocean breeze and street performers greeted the crowd. And wow was it crowded!
Community Everywhere: From families with trailers to pros in matching kits, everyone belonged. It wasn’t about speed, it was about connection.
Why Events Like This Matter
CicLAvia isn’t just a ride; it’s a reminder of what LA could be if more of us chose to move differently. When cars disappear, the city feels smaller, friendlier, and more alive. You notice the murals, the trees, the smell of fresh tortillas coming from a side street taqueria. You see your city, not just drive through it.
Our Takeaway
As cyclists, we often think of LA as a series of fragmented routes stitched together by traffic lights and near misses. But for one day, it became a network of people moving together, powered only by pedals and community.
If you’ve never joined a CicLAvia, make it happen next time. Bring your friends, your family, your camera, and maybe a spare tube. It’s one of the best ways to fall in love with Los Angeles all over again.
Below you’ll find our group (minus one friend who had too much fun talking to vendors)…
