The Sellaronda is a 53 km (33 mi) road biking loop that circumnavigates the Sella massif in the Italian Dolomites. It is one of the most popular and iconic road biking routes in the world and for good reason. The scenery and terrain are simply breathtaking in every sense, with towering peaks, lush meadows, and alpine lakes all around. The Sellaronda is a challenging ride, but it's also incredibly rewarding. The total distance is around 50 kilometers, with an elevation gain of over 1,600 meters (~5,200 feet). The four mountain passes along the route include Passo Campolongo, Passo Pordoi, Passo Sella, and Passo Gardena. The climbs are all relatively gradual, but there are a few sections that can be quite steep. The descents are fast with mostly beautifully paved roads, many twists and turns, and endless scenery.
Planning your trip:
The best time to bike the Sellaronda is during the summer months (approximately later May through early September), when the weather is mild and the roads are open. There are two special days to save on the calendar for Sellaronda Bike Day (June 8 and September 14, 2024) where the roads are reserved for cyclists from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm! There are a number of different ways to ride the Sellaronda, but the most popular option is to do a clockwise loop, starting and ending in one of the four main villages: Corvara, Selva, Arabba, or Canazei. Each town has its own character and numerous accommodations. If you're planning a multi-day trip, there are plenty of hotels and guesthouses to choose from in each village. You can also book guided tours, which can be a great way to learn about the area and make the most of your experience. Additionally, there are numerous bike rental shops in the area given the popularity of cycling during the summer months.
During a recent trip, we were fortunate enough to be able to stay in Selva Val Gardena and found it charming, walkable, incredibly picturesque, and with many great culinary and hotel options. From experience, we can highly recommend The Laurin Small & Charming as a superb hotel option. The entire hotel has a cozy and modern style with wonderful spa area, brilliant breakfast buffet, and spacious rooms. Another feature is a bike and ski locker room for safe keeping of your gear! We cannot say enough good things about this wonderful family run hotel.
